Honoring God is showing how much we value Him. This value wells up from deep in our hearts as we grasp how much He loves us and what He has done for us in the gospel. When we are overwhelmed with how much we value God, our desire to act starts to come alive.
Sometimes honoring God can get off track and we move more towards appeasement. Jesus has already appeased God on our behalf. We don’t have to strive to make God happy with us, or to favor us. We already have His complete acceptance. We are now able to draw from a different well, the well of honoring God because we are crazy in love with Him.
So what might that look like in our finances? Let’s explore a few areas.
Sharing – God invites us to be a part of His redemptive work by giving of our time and our resources. When we see how important caring for others is to God, our hearts respond with generosity because we know it is important to Him. We honor God when we act in a generous way simply because we know generosity is dear to Him.
Spending – God has given us direction in how we spend our resources. He calls us to live within our means and build a lifestyle based on the resources He provides. We honor God when we take steps such as budgeting, learning, planning, and saving to make the very best use of our resources. We know stewardship, caring for what He entrusts to us, is important to Him. When our pursuit of Stewardship comes from a desire to honor God, mundane tasks can now take on new life when we know they show our Lord how much we value Him.
Celebrating – We honor God when we spend time celebrating what He has entrusted to us. Do you always lament what you don’t have, or do you give more energy to thanking God for what He has provided. When we are content with what we have, we don’t spend our time grumbling and we don’t begrudge what God has provided for others. We honor God when we value His judgement in the provision he allots for each of us. We are always free to ask for and pursue more, but we show great honor when we trust that He knows what is best for each of us.
There are countless ways to honor the Lord, both in our finances and in every other area of our lives. When our actions flow from a desire to show His great value to us, we bring Him the greatest of honor, and we show others what an amazing God we get to enjoy.
